Women Peace Initiatives

Description:

Women Peace Initiatives is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that was created in Douala, CAMEROON on September 6th, 2009 and officially registered on August 10th, 2011.
Its mission is to contribute to social stability trough building a movement of women peacemakers to promote active nonviolence, gender sensitivity for durable peace, and sustainable development. The vision of the organization is making Cameroon a beacon of peace, with women as key strategic players.
Its creation was inspired by two key factors. First, the riots in Cameroon in February 2008 that caused widespread damage to the country, including the destruction of infrastructure, abusive arrests, looting, assault, loss of life, just to name a few which clearly demonstrated the vulnerability of women and children during conflicts. Following this, four Cameroonian women participated in a training of trainers on gender and active non-violence Program, organized by the Women Peacemakers (WPP, later AWANICH) to enhance the capacity of organizations working on women's rights, gender, peacebuilding, and other issues requiring the use of the strict Active Non Violence approach.

Key focus areas of the organization: capacity building, advocacy, mentoring and counselling.
